Gregory Peck (Atticus Finch) and Mary Badham (Scout) on the set of To Kill A Mockingbird, 1962. The pair, who played father and daughter in the film, actually remained close and kept in contact for the rest of Gregory Peck’s life. He always called her Scout.

Amy spoke briefly with a gentleman at the book festival about Mary Badham and how well she played Scout. He flipped through a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird while Amy looked up Mary Badham on IMDB. She hasn’t starred in anything quite as famous as TKAM, but she was interviewed for the Hey, Boo documentary (clips of which are being included in the TKAM enhanced ebook). “Yup, she was a natural actor, that one. Scout through and through.”

The Disappearing Island, Seamus Heaney

Once we presumed to found ourselves for good

Between its blue hills and those sandless shores

Where we spent our desperate night in prayer and vigil,

Once we had gathered driftwood, made a hearth

And hung our cauldron like a firmament,

The island broke beneath us like a wave.

The land sustaining us seemed to hold firm

Only when we embraced it in extremis.

All I believe that happened there was vision.
